Digital Music Magazine | “Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino” Debuts on Top Charts
The Arctic Monkeys return after nearly half a decade of no new releases and have struck a chord with listeners and critics who’ve been showcasing the album at #1 on the Billboards Top Rock Albums as well as Alternative Albums lists as of May 26th, 2018.
The band released the album earlier this month under Domino Recording Company – May 11th, 2018. Within just six days following the release sales have reached an equivalence of 47,000 album units of which 37 thousand were generated via physical copies of the record. This, of course, is an impressive feat on its own, but the remaining 10k streaming listens the album has received also placed the record on No. 2 for the title of “most streams in a week” for a 2018 rock album.
The record features production from James Ford, a friend and regular collaborator on the Arctic Monkeys’ projects, and band frontman Alex Turner. Turner has revealed that he composed the core of the album on the keys of a piano which would explain the deviation of sound from their previous “guitar-heavy” records.
The album delves into grand orchestral elements with influences drawn from both pop and jazz and delving into topics of both politics and religion. The many new components influencing the style of the Arctic Monkeys’ latest records resulted in a great new selection of songs with a refreshing previously untapped sound.
